Mineral crystals use a similar material to windowpane glass and were developed for watches as a harder alternative to acrylic. Mineral crystals are still susceptible to scratches but less so than acrylic, however it is not possible to buff out these scratches as it is with acrylic. Mineral glass is not as shatter resistant as acrylic but does offer greater transparency and clarity. Due to their improved scratch resistance versus acrylic, and improved shatter resistance versus sapphire, mineral is often considered to be the best of both worlds as a crystal material.

"In the last 5 years or so, Timex has really been upping their game. Cheap chrome-plated brass cases have been replaced with stainless stell. The case is mostly brushed, with a thin, easy-to-miss polished bevel along the lugs. The quality of the finishing is very good, especially for this price point. The crown is signed with The Waterbury "W", and the chrono pushers have a nice cross-hatch pattern on them. The case provides 100m water resistance, so you can wear it anywhere, although I would recommend swapping out the leather strap for a nylon or rubber strap if you plan on wearing it at the beach. The supplied quick-release leather strap is surprisingly supple, and the buckle is signed with the Timex logo. Not bad! But the real focus is on that beautiful royal blue sunburst dial. The sunburst effect is strong and has a nice sense of depth. The 3 sub dials range from light grey, dark grey, to blue and these are what really sold me on the watch. The applied indexes play with any available light, and the segmented hands are legible in almost any light. The lume is probably the one thing that doesn't measure up to the rest of the watch, but it is adequate. There is a date window in the 4:30 position, but my eyes are about 20 years past the age where I could read it without glasses. I was unable to find any info on the movement manufacturer, but the 4 ticks/second of the red chronograph hand makes me think it's a Seiko mecha-quartz. This is a good thing. Overall, this is a great watch at a really good price. Now I see there's a new model with a silver dial with silver & black sub dials. . I may just have to get that one too."
